OUR UNIQUE APPROACH

At Donovan Strategic Learning, we move beyond subject tutoring to teach students how to learn, so that they can independently tackle any learning endeavor, both in their current academics and in any future life-long learning situation. We use the student’s class content to teach research-based learning techniques, providing a web of skill and content support that is optimal for creating lasting academic success.

HOW ARE OUR SERVICES DIFFERENT FROM CONTENT TUTORING?

We DO provide subject-specific support during our Strategic Learning sessions; however, our methods are quite distinct from content tutoring. Instead of reteaching students content they struggle with, we identify the “why” behind their struggle and provide targeted strategies that get to the root of the issue. Our emphasis is on teaching students to think critically about their learning process and become independent learners by using the tools that are available to them rather than depending on reteaching content.

HOW ARE OUR SERVICES DIFFERENT FROM SKILL-BASED TUTORING AND STUDY SKILLS COURSES?

Our philosophy is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to learning. Using the 5-Step Learning Process, we analyze the patterns of breakdown in the individual student's learning and guide them to find the tools that match their needs. Furthermore, unlike a study skills course, we embed study skills into the student’s coursework, teaching learning skills and practicing content at the same time. We are responsive to the individual needs of the student as well as their upcoming academic work. Our system is not just a list of study skills that all students benefit from, but rather a comprehensive learning program.

DO WE PROVIDE EXECUTIVE FUNCTION COACHING?

Yes! We do provide executive function training, although we are not exclusively executive function coaches. We do incorporate executive functioning skills for those who need it, yet that is one small subset of the learning process. Our practices are adapted to the entire learning process and will identify target areas to strengthen.

ARE OUR SERVICES AIMED AT STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES?

All students, regardless of ability and level of success, can benefit from our 5-Step Learning Process and comprehensive learning system. Students with disabilities often see the largest gain, though the results may take a bit longer than students without disabilities.

With a Master's in Teaching Students with Special Needs (5th-12th) and over two decades of experience as a learning specialist, Jennie specializes in teaching students with disabilities, including ADHD, learning disabilities (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, NVLD, auditory processing disorder), anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, speech and language impairment, and concussions.
